Unit Description

The Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Research provides strategic vision, leadership, and partnership expertise that helps University of Pittsburgh faculty and students advance their world-class research, scholarship, and innovation. Pitt Research couples the research efforts of faculty and students to funding agencies, corporate sponsors, other institutions, and government entities, and assures integrity, compliance, and excellence.

Eligibility

DSAS Humanities Ph.D. students with no university academic appointment in summer 2022 (TA/TF/GSA/GSR/other full summer funding) or external fellowship and who expect to be enrolled in fall 2022. 

Stipend

$3,000 for ca. 150 hours of effort in summer 2022

Internship Project Overview

An internship with the communications team of the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Research (SVCR) will result in a hands-on collaborative experience focusing on the strategies and tools we use to communicate the Pitt Research enterprise.

The offices of the SVCR focus on the business of research – the funding, the compliance, the access to larger research-related resources, and the pathways to innovation and commercialization. The challenge is to tell the successes of research and scholarship, as well as explain these administrative partnerships that help researchers achieve their accomplishments.

The successful intern will work with staff throughout the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Research to write and edit content for a variety of channels; craft analytics and recommend strategies to improve user experiences; and work on university-wide research-related showcase events.

The intern should expect a combination of in-person office work and remote. 

Responsibilities:

  • Edit communications when needed (newsletters, webpage, etc.)
  • Create web content using Drupal and content calendars (with imagery) for social media
  • Write at least one feature story for newsletter
  • Benchmark and audit peer websites and newsletters for best practices and recommended updates.
  • Audit campus units’ web links to Pitt Research, and create plan to deal with gaps, inaccuracies
  • Create website, social, and newsletter analytics reports, and prepare report on weaknesses and opportunities for growth
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling, updating agendas
  • Participate in development of inaugural Pitt Research Annual Report and development and execution of Funding Showcase
  • Participate in weekly comms team meeting, monthly university comms team meeting
  • Meet with other SVCR management team in informational interviews

Qualifications

  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs and social media platforms
  • Skills in communicating complex research concepts to a lay audience
  • Understanding of social media, and web management (with desire to learn Drupal content management system)
  • Excellent organizational, coordination and communications skills, with collegial and collaborative approach to project management
