All maps inevitably distort reality. They project a complex, three-dimensional world onto a flat, two-dimensional plane. Mapmakers use generalization and symbols to highlight the points they want to make. Therefore, depending on the goals of its maker, a map can be deceptive, or even threatening, especially if used as propaganda. This workshop will briefly trace the role of the map in the history of humanity and take a closer look at how we lie with maps.
